Keynote by visiting professor Dr. Dana Hall
Director of jazz studies and ethnomusicology at DePaul University, Chicago, USA
While the teaching and practice of jazz is global, its origins are rooted in African American culture. Global interpretations of jazz have naturally incorporated the harmonic and rhythmic languages found in musics locally, often centering these and other localized cultural attributes while marginalizing these foundational elements. How do we as jazz educators acknowledge the important African American cultural connections in jazz, while simultaneously recognizing these important differences found in institutions all over the world?
Dana Hall will deliver a keynote on the second day of the 2023 IASJ Jazz Meeting. The African American cultural connections in jazz is the recurrent theme in all Ongoing Dialogues during the week.
