Welcome (back) to the IASJ Jazz Meeting!

We are excited to see you at the 2023 IASJ Jazz Meeting in Helsinki, Finland. You will meet with colleagues from all over the world. The list of participants is more international than ever.

The combos

We’ll form preliminary line-ups for the six combos beforehand. Each combo will play two or more standards to see if there is a chemistry between the participants. After the audition, the combo leaders have a meeting and make the necessary line-up changes if needed.

Please prepare your students to check these tunes beforehand in different keys:
All The Things You Are (Kern, Hammerstein II)
Just One Of Those Things (Porter)
A Weaver Of Dreams (Young, Elliot)
Scrapple From The Apple (Parker)
All Of Me (Marks, Simmons)
How Deep Is The Ocean (Berlin)
There Never Will Be Another You (Warren, Gordon)

Co-coaching a combo

The Sibelius Academy Honorary Doctors Aaron Goldberg (US), Tim Hagans (US), Anders Jormin (SE) and David Liebman (US), as well as professor Jukkis Uotila (FI) and Savannah Harris (US) will be coaching the combos. If you would like (co)coach a combo, please get in touch and let us know with whom you would like to co-coach.

Keynote by Dr. Dana Hall

We feel that now would be a good time to concentrate especially on questions concerning the cultural connections of jazz music, past and present, and how they affect pedagogic practices in jazz programs all over the world. Dr. Dana Hall’s presentation will be the starting point for the discussions in the Ongoing Dialogues

Teacher concert version 2023

The 2023 IASJ Jazz Meeting will not have a teacher concert as before. Instead, there will be a teacher group opening every jam session during the week. We’ll form the exquisite teacher groups to open the jam sessions. We are confident that this concept better connects the students and teachers.

Bring your instrument if you can. If you need an instrument from the school, please let us know. In the past, teachers established groups that toured and recorded after IASJ Jazz Meetings. Or organized teacher exchanges within educational programs.

Ongoing Dialogues

Several topics have been already proposed, as you can see from the website. Do you have a topic to suggest? Please send your ideas to:
This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

During the past meetings, the topics discussed always had a direct practical connection to jazz performance and jazz education. This kind of research is called ‘applied jazz research’. Since November 2023, there is the IASJ Journal of Applied Jazz Research. The topics of the Ongoing Dialogues will filter into the IASJ Jazz Journal.
The academic research is presented on Saturday during the Research afternoon. If any questions concerning that session, please write to:

The six combos will perform on the last two nights of the week, three combos each night. Please attend both final concerts, evaluate what you have seen and heard with the students. If you like to know how the final concerts were the last two years:
